If the patient is unconscious and not breathing, start CPR. Steps...

  1. Check safety - make sure the area is safe for you and the patient
  2. Check response - tap/pinch shoulders, shout 'are you ok'. Be a bit violent. They should not be able to ignore you
  3. Call for help - Call emergency service - or ask for someone nearby to call. Ask for AED/Defibrillator
  4. Check Breathing
    • Put your ear to their mouth while looking at their chest
    • Listen/feel for breath - look for chest going up/down
    • Wait 10 seconds
  5. Start Chest Compressions - if not breathing, start CPR
    • Place person on the flat of their back
    • Kneel next to their chest
    • Place heel of one hand in the center of chest
    • Other hand on top
    • Lock your elbows - they shouldn't bend
    • Push using body weight
    • Push 5-6 cm deep - based on body type
    • 100-120 pushes per minute
    • Let chest come fully up before pushing
    • Rotate with other people if you have to
  6. Do not stop until
    • Medical person tells you to stop
    • Person starts breathing normally
    • You are exhausted
